However, when the steel coil is later split, for example during the production of slit strip, open, ungalvanized cut edges remain. Depending on the ambient conditions, the cathodic protection of the zinc coating ensures that corrosion protection is maintained up to a certain material thickness.
However, in order to provide even better corrosion protection for demanding components, galvanizing can also take place later in the manufacturing process. If galvanizing is carried out after the production of slit strip, this is referred to as edge-galvanized strip steel.
Advantages of the edge-galvanized slit strip:
Corrosion resistance: The zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion in several ways. Thanks to the zinc coating, the steel is not exposed to harmful environmental influences that can lead to rust formation. In addition, the zinc coating protects the steel by acting as a sacrificial anode, so that the zinc oxidizes first before the steel can be attacked.

Galvanizing protection by rounding the edges:
In addition to galvanizing the strip, there is also the option of rounding the edges. Here, the slit strip runs through a system in which steel rollers round off the sharp cut edges. The zinc coating is also drawn over the edge. This improves the corrosion protection on the edges. Another side effect of the rounded steel strip is the reduced risk of injury due to deburring.
