Production and advantages of edge-galvanized steel strip

Galvanized steel strip is produced by hot-dip galvanizing or electrogalvanizing. In hot-dip galvanizing, the steel is passed through a molten zinc bath. This creates a protective zinc coating. Electrogalvanizing, on the other hand, uses electrochemical processes. This makes it possible to apply thinner layers of zinc or to vary the thickness of the zinc layer.

Steel coils are often galvanized in a strip galvanizing process in the steel mill. However, when the steel coil is later split, for example during the production of slit strip, open, ungalvanized cut edges remain. Depending on the ambient conditions, the cathodic protection of the zinc coating ensures that corrosion protection is maintained up to a certain material thickness.

However, in order to provide even better corrosion protection for demanding components, galvanizing can also take place later in the manufacturing process. If galvanizing is carried out after the production of slit strip, this is referred to as edge-galvanized strip steel.

Advantages of the edge-galvanized slit strip:

Corrosion resistance: The zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion in several ways. Thanks to the zinc coating, the steel is not exposed to harmful environmental influences that can lead to rust formation. In addition, the zinc coating protects the steel by acting as a sacrificial anode, so that the zinc oxidizes first before the steel can be attacked.
Durability: Due to its high corrosion resistance, galvanized steel retains its structural integrity for many years.
Versatility: It is used in various forms in the construction, automotive, agricultural and solar industries. (e.g. tube, structural part or blank)
Self-healing: Due to the effect of the zinc coating as a sacrificial anode, minor damage to the zinc layer has no significant negative impact on the protective effect of the galvanizing.
Galvanizing protection by rounding the edges:

In addition to galvanizing the strip, there is also the option of rounding the edges. Here, the slit strip runs through a system in which steel rollers round off the sharp cut edges. The zinc coating is also drawn over the edge. This improves the corrosion protection on the edges. Another side effect of the rounded steel strip is the reduced risk of injury due to deburring.
