Current situation in the steel industry

The German steel industry is facing major challenges. In addition to a drop in crude steel production, high energy costs and strict environmental regulations are placing an additional burden on the industry. One glimmer of hope is the switch to ‘green steel’. Overall, the situation remains tense, but there are positive developments and initiatives that give hope for a sustainable recovery.

The steel industry as the driving force behind the industrial upturn in Germany. How did it all begin – including here in Wetter an der Ruhr
Friedrich Harkort, often referred to as the ‘father of the Ruhr’, was a key figure in the early industrial revolution in Germany. Born in 1793 and died in 1880, he founded the Harkort’sche Maschinenfabrik in Wetter (Ruhr), later DEMAG. His factory played a decisive role in the introduction of pumps, steam engines and railway tracks, which made coal mining possible in civil engineering. Harkort was also one of the first steel producers in Germany and founded one of the country’s first steel factories in 1819. He campaigned for social reforms such as the ban on child labour, the establishment of health insurance funds and universal education. As a member of the Reichstag, he fought for the rights and welfare of his employees.

Friedrich Harkort was therefore not only a pioneer of the German steel industry, but also a visionary who had a lasting impact on Germany’s industrial and social landscape.
