Electric Furnace Steel
In contrast to the methods described earlier in an electric arc furnace nearly no pig-iron is used. The steel is mainly produced from scrap metal. An electric arc furnace uses two electrodes to heat the metal. Usually the metal is one of these electrodes and the other electrode is a graphite rod entering the furnace from above. During operation an electric arc appears between the two electrodes and serves as heat source. In an induction furnace the heat is produced inside an inductor below the furnace.
The induction method is used for the production of stainless steel and other high-alloyed steel which has to be exactly conforming to the standard.
